At J-CUB, students learn to create, develop, and launch new products and services. In this section, we present you some of the teams currently taking part in J-CUB.   

The start-up option at Constructor University offers a framework that encourages the use of design thinking, lean start-up methodologies, and real-world application.

Since J-CUB was first offered at Constructor University in 2019, more than 10 businesses have been conceptualized.

Student Founds Virtual Reality Lab at Jacobs University

It was always clear to him that he would do "something with technology," said Nicklas Vorrink, "I love technology.” Only what that particular ‘something’ could be, he didn't know for a long time. That changed when he was given a pair of virtual reality goggles by a company after an internship- "It's such cool technology," he exclaimed. Now Nicklas, who is studying Industrial Engineering & Management, founded a Virtual Reality (VR) Lab at Jacobs University Bremen. He wants to show students and companies how they can use the technology for their needs.

Startup "WasteAnt"

The systems have to be robust and reliable, able to cope with all kinds of adversity, such as poor visibility. "There are many similarities between underwater robotics and the requirements of waste management," says Dr. Szymon Krupinski. No longer dedicated to deep-sea exploration, Krupinski, Arturo Gomez Chavez and Dr. Christian Müller are using their expertise to increase recycling rates. The scientists, who share a common history at Jacobs University Bremen, want to modernize waste management with their startup "WasteAnt" and contribute to waste prevention.

Host4Ukraine facilitates Housing for Ukrainian Refugees

There are very unusual offers of help: Someone offers a sailboat as an accommodation, another a caravan. Hotels provide free rooms, as do real estate companies. But above all, private hosts are providing accommodation: Individual beds, rooms, apartments, entire houses. "The people are creative, the solidarity is incredible," said Nils Bischoff. And it goes beyond borders. Not only in Germany and Europe do people provide free housing for Ukrainian refugees over Host4Ukraine (https://www.host4ukraine.com), but also in the United States or Australia. Even the Fiji Islands are providing shelter.

Startup Summit Bremen

On July 1, 2022, around 50 startups from Bremen and the greater region of Northern Germany attended the Startup Summit Bremen, a fair surrounding the interests of entrepreneurship. Three of the booths were manned by Jacobs University’s very own students and graduates hoping to expand their networks for their startup companies. The Startup Summit offers founders and young entrepreneurs the opportunity to increase their contacts and attract supporters along with potential collaborators. In addition to many networking opportunities and presentations, the Sparkasse Bremen Startup Prize was awarded.

Microsoft Imagine Cup: Jacobs University students win

Two first year undergraduate students at Jacobs University secured first place at the finals of the international Microsoft Imagine Cup 2022 with their solution for treating hand paralysis. Zain A. Samdani studies Robotics and Intelligent Systems at the international university, his fellow student Ramin Udash Computer Science. Along with two other team members, they won $100,000 in prize money, a mentoring session with Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, and a $50,000 credit for the Microsoft cloud platform Azure.

Lanfrica: A Database for African Languages

An estimated 2,000 languages are spoken on the African continent, more than in any other region of the world. The digital world, however, does not reflect their diversity; it is dominated by English. To change this, Bonaventure Dossou, a Master's student in Data Engineering at Jacobs University Bremen, together with his friend Chris Emezue developed a translation and speech recognition software for Fon, a language spoken in his home country of Benin. In addition, they also developed MMTAfrica, a multilingual machine translation for six African languages.

JSC 2022: Invitation to the online finals

There's no doubt about it: it will be informative, stimulating and exciting! The business ideas that will be presented at the finals of the international Jacobs Startup Competition on March 12 could hardly be more diverse. One team wants to simplify the use of artificial intelligence, another intends to make the production of palm oil in Nigeria more sustainable. A third has developed a technology that can identify certain diseases based on breath. Guests can follow via livestream which founders will make it onto the winners' podium with their pitch.
