The mobility of goods, people and information is an important building block for any society’s growth. A range of new technologies under the heading “mobility 4.0” is currently revolutionizing our mobility. These include wireless positioning and communication as well as autonomous cars. In a workshop on the theme “Positioning, Navigation and Communications” (WPNC) to be held on October 25 and 26 at Jacobs University in Bremen, international scientists will present the latest research findings - and use a car to demonstrate how far advanced the self-driving car technologies now are.
For more than a decade, WPNC has been an important platform for discussions on the latest research and future developments between researchers and industry representatives. “Wireless data transfer is at the heart of many new applications in logistics, autonomous driving, production, the household and in many other areas,” says Professor Dr.-Ing. Giuseppe Abreu, a lecturer in electronic engineering and computer science at Jacobs University and one of the heads of the workshop.
One of the highlights of the conference will be the demonstration drive of an autonomous vehicle equipped with the Lidar technology for environment recognition by the company, Ibeo. Lidar stands for “light detection and ranging” - a type of laser-based radar that is able to detect other vehicles, people and obstacles and react accordingly. Ibeo has registered offices in Hamburg and is the market leader in the development of technology that is significantly more accurate than traditional GPS systems.
Conference participants include researchers from France, Scotland, Italy, Finland, Israel, Korea and Germany. Themes such as locating people and objects in buildings, electrical vehicle navigation, underwater positioning and e-mobility are on the agenda. Professor Alfonso Damiano from Cagliari University in Italy will report on the effects of e-mobility on town planning as it is associated with a change in road use. “I look forward to the discussions, which promise to be exciting and inspiring,” says Professor Abreu.
