Bremen in Brussels: Micro B3 Final Conference

October 27, 2015
From 2 to 5 November researchers from Jacobs University will be in Brussels to hold up Micro B3 Final Conference. Micro B3 stands for Marine Microbial Biodiversity, Bioinformatics, Biotechnology and means a large integrative European Project (EU 7FP), which aims to process large amounts of data from world-wide marine research campaigns with modern bioinformatic methods. The project is led by Dr. Frank Oliver Glöckner, Professor of Bioinformatics at Jacobs University. Together with his team and working groups he instigated a new understanding of the diversity of marine plankton. In cooperation with biotechnologists, novel opportunities are explored how to utilize these small organism while safeguarding marine resources. Furthermore, Micro B3 developed international standards, to enable the transdisciplinary use of a range of different existing databases.
The objective of the Micro B3 Final Conference is to bring together policy and biodiversity stakeholders from Europe and overseas to present the project results, discuss on the project perspectives and provide key recommendations and inputs from Micro B3 researchers to the European Commission. Moreover it is dedicated to put to wider use bioinformatics and genomic technologies for ocean observation and monitoring.
The project results so far will be presented at the conference as well: use of bioinformatic tools for discovery, description and visualization for the utilisation of novel gene functions; development of integrated transdisciplinary access to existing international databases; model agreement on implementing the Nagoya Protocol on Access and Benefit Sharing to the Convention on Biological Diversity.
