From Paris to Petersburg:
Russian Art in the context of the European Modernism

Was Russian art of the last century merely an attempt to imitate or reappropriate Western influences? Or did the work of these artists actively contribute to the development of European Modernism? These questions will be addressed in the symposium “Near and Far: The Contribution of Russian Art to European Modernism,” to take place at IUB, August 24–26, 2006.

[ Aug 17, 2006]  Forty scholars from Germany, Austria, Poland, Slovakia, and Switzerland will participate in the conference, which is open to the public and will be held in German.

“In the German-speaking world, critical assessments of Russian art generally have been less than impartial,” says Isabel Wünsche, IUB professor of art and art history. “The diversity of Russian art is reflected in two main concepts: the avant-garde and socialist realism. The independent development of Russian art within a European context has not yet been fully explored. We want to address this gap.”

On Friday, August 25, 2006, from 8 to 10 pm, a public
discussion forum will take place at the IUB Campus Center. Art
historians, joined by curators, an art dealer, art collector, and a
journalist will discuss these and other aspects of Russian art.
