Was Russian art of the last century merely an attempt to imitate or reappropriate Western influences? Or did the work of these artists actively contribute to the development of European Modernism? These questions will be addressed in the symposium “Near and Far: The Contribution of Russian Art to European Modernism,” to take place at IUB, August 24–26, 2006.

Forty scholars from Germany, Austria, Poland, Slovakia, and Switzerland will participate in the conference, which is open to the public and will be held in German.
