Captain's Intercultural Talk - "Polynesian Navigation with the Stars"
The settlement of the Pacific Ocean which began 3000 years ago is a fascinating story. The Polynesians were without a doubt the greatest high sea voyagers in human history. They developed amazing navigational skills that were necessary for this! Everything that nature and the sea, offered was used: stars, waves, sea birds, clouds, sea animals and the harmony with nature itself! They employed “point navigation” without sextants, magnetic compasses or chronometers. When the Vikings discovered America in the year 1000, the Polynesians were already trading with South America.
About the speaker:
Klaus Müller is one of the most renowned captains of Germany. He was the captain of the elegant 4-mast ship Royal Clipper and also the famous Alexander von Humboldt which is docked in the Schlachte in Bremen, City.

Vor 3000 Jahren begann die Besiedlung des Pazifiks.Eine phänomenale navigatorische Leistung war dafür nötig! Alles, was die Natur und das Meer bietet, wurde genutzt: Sterne, Wellen, Seevögel, Wolken, Meerestiere und der Einklang mit der Natur! Man betrieb Punktnavigation ohne Sextant, Magnetkompass oder Chronometer. Als die Wikinger im Jahre 1000 Amerika entdeckten, trieben die Polynesier Handel mit Südamerika. Die Polynesier sind als die größten Hochseenavigatoren des offenen Ozeans in der Geschichte der Menschheit bekannt.
Dieser Vortrag ist die Auftaktveranstaltung zum Themenjahr "Phänomenal“ mit einem einmaligen, maritimen Flair in Bremen-Nord.
